Google in talks with Hutchison Whampoa for free roaming

Google is reportedly in talks with Hutchison Whampoa to secure free international roaming services for mobile phone users in the US.

The aim of the deal would be to allow Google to offer the same rate for voice and data services regardless of where the customer is located, whether in the US or roaming abroad.

The two companies are said to be discussing a wholesale access agreement that would allow their respective customers to roam for free in the US and Europe.

Sources told The Telegraph that Hutchison Whampoa was a natural partner for Google as it has also sought to eliminate roaming fees for Three customers. In March 2015, Hutchison Whampoa entered into an agreement with Telefónica to buy its UK subsidiary, O2 UK for £9.25 billion.

The news comes about a month after Google announced plans to launch its MVNO service. While the company called it a “small scale” project, the service is expected to increase pressure on the already competitive US market.
