The move is aimed at improving its network’s scalability, functionality and efficiency.
By using 100G flexible CDC ROADMs, Verizon hopes to complete the upgrade while maintaining existing services.
“Deploying a new coherent, optimised and highly scalable metro network means Verizon stays ahead of the growth trajectory while providing an even more robust network infrastructure for future demand,” said Lee Hicks, VP of Verizon network planning. “Ciena and Cisco met not only our technology requirements but the aggressive timeline to deploy our next-generation 100G-and-above metro network.”
Verizon plans to test and deploy Ciena’s 6500 packet optical technology and Cisco’s Network Convergence System on segments of its 100G metro network this year, with the aim of going live with traffic in 2016.
