Equinix launches IBX in Melbourne

Equinix today revealed that its first international business exchange (IBX) in Melbourne, Australia, is now fully operational.

A study from Dimensional Research has found that 85% of Australian enterprises are planning to deploy multiple clouds within the next year, and Equinix’s ME1 facility will support the strong demand for these data centre services.

“In the modern digital economy, data centres are vital pieces of infrastructure, and this expansion is very much to be welcomed,” said Paul Fletcher MP, parliamentary secretary to the minister of communications.

“ME1 is an impressive facility which will offer new opportunities for companies to interconnect and in turn to help enrich Australia’s digital economy.”

The launch also extends Platform Equinix in the country, and ME1 opens with more than 40 new customers deployed; including Telstra, Vocus and Micron21.

"We extended our dark fibre network into ME1 as it offers Micron21 the ability to provide cost-effective interconnections with just about any network provider, cloud service or company we choose to, should we need to,” said James Braunegg, MD at Micron21.

“Equinix's vast interconnection capability made ME1 the obvious choice. It's great to see this capability now available in Melbourne. We are very much looking forward to growing our services within ME1 and supporting the Equinix ecosystem.”

Earlier this month, Equinix launched its third IBX in Singapore.
