Morocco awards 4G licences

Maroc Telecom, Medi Telecom and Wana Corporate have been awarded 4G licences in Morocco’s auction, Reuters reports.

According to local sources, the auction raised 2 billion Moroccan dirham ($200 million), with Maroc Telecom paying half this amount to secure the most sought after frequencies.

Wana Corporate and Medi Telecom are said to have each paid 500 million dirham.

The Moroccan government launched its auction plans in November last year, after delayed predictions that the country would launch tenders for mobile licences by the end of 2013.

In January this year, Maroc Telecom acquired six African assets from Etisalat for a total of €474 million ($547 million).
