Calix and Puntonet bring GPON technology to Ecuador

Calix is helping to expand the fibre network of Ecuador’s third largest telco Puntonet by deploying gigabit passive optical network (GPON) technology.

The move will enable Puntonet to deliver voice and high-speed data services throughout the Ecuadorian capital of Quito and beyond.

It forms part of the Ecuadorian operator’s fibre network expansion which aims to double its number of residential subscribers and introduce IPTV services.

Puntonet initially offered residential broadband services via Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) technology, but, following completion of a successful trial, is aiming to roll-out GPON to 2000 subscribers.

“The implementation of the Calix platform has allowed us to vastly improve the broadband experience of our residential customers through stable and high-speed broadband access,” said Katherin Miño, COO and general manager of Puntonet. “With GPON in place, we have been able to extend our FTTH deployment and consider a range of new cloud-enhanced services to roll out to our customers.”
