Ooredoo joins Sea-Me-We5 consortium

Ooredoo has become the latest Middle Eastern carrier to join the Sea-Me-We5 cable consortium, which will link the region to South East Asia and Western Europe.

The 20,000km cable, which is due to go live in 2016, will have a landing station in Qatar which will be managed by Ooredoo Global Services (OGS).

The carrier hopes the move will further position Qatar and Oman as global hubs. Ooredoo is also part of theAAE-1 cable consortium, which aims to link Asia, Africa and Europe, and is also scheduled to go live in 2016.

“OGS is proud to be playing its part in developing this vital piece of global infrastructure, and we note that it will be among the first global cables to land in Qatar and Oman, helping to build our role as a vital global hub for online traffic,” said Yousuf Abdulla Al-Kubaisi, CEO, OGS.

Both Sea-Me-We5 and AAE-1 spearhead a number of new cable projects set to bring new levels of connectivity across Europe, the Middle East and Asia in the next few years.
