Vodafone Germany begins migration to next-generation network

Vodafone Germany is pushing ahead with its NFV and SDN strategy through the deployment of a new project with Cisco and Italtel.

The project, called Telco Over Cloud, is aimed at migrating the German operator’s fixed legacy networks and deploying services onto a common virtualised infrastructure empowered by Virtual Computing Environment (VCE) technology.

Telco Over Cloud was first set up by Vodafone in 2012, as it aimed to be an early adopter of NFV and SDN technologies.

The latest phase of the project will see the migration of six classless proprietary-based soft-switches serving more than two million SIP subscribers onto three Vodafone data centres across the country.

Italtel is deploying its range of solutions in Germany, while Cisco is acting as prime contractor for the users’ migration, which is ongoing and mostly completed.

“Vodafone is a firm believer and supporter of Telco over Cloud and SDN as two key technology transformational thrusts that will deeply affect the way the telecoms industry will consume technology,” said Roberto Vercelli, head of All IP One Core - NFV at Vodafone Core & Transport Centre of Excellence - TSO. “Italtel’s rapid adoption of this strategy has enabled us to move from theory into real implementation to serve real customers.”
