Telefónica and Orange spearhead Smart Cities initiative

Telefónica and Orange have joined forces with Engineering and Atos to launch an initiative designed to support the growth and development of Smart Cities.

FIWARE Open Source Community aims to bring together IoT, cloud and big data technologies through an ‘Open Data’ policy.

FIWARE, which was created through a public-private partnership between over 40 organisations and the European Commission, is an open source platform that integrates a number of components designed to make it easier to develop smart applications.

The four companies believe FIWARE to be critical to the development of Smart Cities, enabling more efficient management of municipal services and bringing about open standards.

“Using FIWARE, Smart Cities can deliver the platform, combining Open Data and the APIs based on which new innovative applications can be created,” said Marieta Rivero, chief deputy commercial officer at Telefónica.

It is hoped the platform will also help attract startups and small enterprises to create innovative services for Smart Cities: “There is an incredible opportunity for European cities to take advantage of open solutions and a wide community of developers, to quickly bring digital services and innovations to their citizens,” said Patrice Slupowski, VP of digital innovation, Orange.
