Mavenir launches VoWifi solution for cable operators

Mavenir Systems has launched voice over Wifi (VoWifi) for cable operators in a bid to enhance their bundled TV and internet services.

The service is said to incorporate features for session control, as well as application and messaging servers, and access and border gateways. The company said the solution can be integrated with an operator’s existing multimedia subsystem (IMS) core network or deployed as a greenfield network to offer voice, video and messaging applications using Wifi access.

Mavenir added that it is in talks with multiple cable operators to plan VoWifi as part of their mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) strategies or as a standalone offering paired with the standard video and content distribution offer.

“We believe that VoWifi changes the competitive landscape for cable operators,” said Pardeep Kohli, president and CEO of Mavenir Systems. “Mavenir’s converged IMS solution provides cable operators the benefit of seamless mobility between Wifi and cellular networks, as well as proven interoperability and a native user experience on the latest Wifi-calling enabled devices, such as Apple’s iPhone 6.”

The VoWifi solution, part of the firm’s wider virtualisation portfolio, is based on Mavenir’s mOne Convergence platform, IMS core and application servers and cross-platform mobile clients. The company claims the VoWifi solution will also leverage network functions virtualisation (NFV) to deploy new services on the cloud infrastructure of service providers.
