Orange and Nokia pen Telco Cloud partnership

France’s Orange and Finnish vendor Nokia Networks have signed a ‘Telco Cloud partnership’, designed to focus on the virtualisation of IP multimedia core network subsystem (IMS).

The deal has already seen the two companies achieve one of the first voice calls in a fully virtualised IMS experimental environment.

“An early leader in this field, Orange has chosen Nokia Networks as a Telco Cloud and virtualisation partner as part of an ambitious NFV transformation preparation project,” said Noël Foret, core network VP at Orange.

“The findings from this partnership are essential for building Orange’s future network and IT infrastructure, and to prepare for operational transformation across our operations as a result of NFV.”

The project is said to be a significant step in Orange’s strategy to leverage cloud and NFV for a more agile, automated and streamlined network operation.

The proof of concept for the fully virtualised IMS solution consists of Nokia’s IMS, Open TAS (telecommunications application server) and subscriber data management, as well as its cloud application manager solution.

This solution was then used as a control plane to achieve the voice call in a virtualised environment.

“We are delighted to be the partner of Orange in this field,” said Michael Clever, SVP of core at Nokia Networks.

“We have gained highly valuable experience from this collaboration with Orange, jointly enriching our expertise on Telco Cloud and knowledge of leading edge operator’s requirements.”
