ANALYSIS: Global wholesale rankings largely stable in 2014

The global wholesale rankings were largely stable in 2014, internet performance firm Dyn has exclusively confirmed to Capacity.

Level 3 Communications (AS3356) retains the number one spot as it continues to integrate Global Crossing (AS3549).

Four years since the $1.9 billion acquisition, AS3549 finally falls out of the global top 10, as the wholesale customers it has transferred onto Level 3’s network have preserved Level 3’s sizeable lead.

The biggest movement outside of the unchanged top two was from TeliaSonera, which climbed four places to third spot. Edging past Cogent on its way, TeliaSonera came very close to passing second place NTT Communications in the key global wholesale metric.

Dyn attributed TeliaSonera’s success in 2014 to a continental strategy that looked past the primary focus of the region – for example, Brazil in Latin America, China in Asia-Pacific and the US in North America - to pick up significant transit from countries outside the main spotlight; namely Uruguay,Argentina, Korea and Canada.

As Global Crossing exits the top 10, Telecom Italia Sparkle moved in to tenth spot, with strong growth in Turkey, Egypt and Syria.
