Telecom Italia to invest €14.5 billion in broadband

Telecom Italia is to invest €14.5 billion in faster broadband in Italy and Brazil.

Under the three-year investment program, Telecom Italia will spend about €10 billion in Italy and over €4 billion in Brazil, where its subsidiary Tim Brasil operates the country’s second-biggest mobile network.

The company will spend approximately €3 billion on the rollout of fibre broadband networks in Italy, an increase of about €1.1 billion more than in the previous plan. The investment will extend the reach of fibre to 75% of the country’s population.

By the end of 2017, Telecom Italia aims to cover 75% of Italy’s population with fibre, its CEO Marco Patuano said at a company presentation on Friday. About €500 million of that investment will go towards the deployment of FTTH networks.

“By 2017 this acceleration of investment in optic fibre is expected to increase the number of active customers by approximately 1 million compared to the targets of the previous plan,” the company said in a statement.

In Brazil, the company aims to extend 4G coverage to more than 15,000 sites and 3G coverage to over 14,000 sites by 2017.
