NBN Co. partners with ARRIS for HFC broadband network

Australia’s National Broadband Network Company (NBN Co.) has selected US-based ARRIS Group for the deployment of its next-generation hybrid fibre-coaxial (HFC) broadband network.

HFC technology will enable NBN Co. to build upon its existing cable infrastructure for the delivery of advanced broadband speeds to customers across Australia. It is also expected to mean significant cost savings for Australian tax-payers compared to alternative technologies.

The agreement will see ARRIS implement its products and services to enable NBN Co. to enhance and manage its cable access network, as well as prepare it for the potential future migration to DOCSIS (data over cable service interface specification) 3.1 architecture.

“An HFC network represents the fastest and most cost-effective way to deliver it to consumers and businesses in the existing HFC network areas,” said Dennis Steiger, CTO at NBN Co.

“Our goal is to achieve high-speed broadband as quickly as possible, with an eye on future technologies that will secure our place as a global technology leader.”

ARRIS equipment includes its converted edge router, forward path transmitters and service assurance solutions. ARRIS Global Services has also been selected for full deployment and network integration of the national broadband service.

“ARRIS is honoured to be selected by NBN Co. for this exciting project and whole-heartedly endorses the use of HFC technology to proliferate broadband across Australia,” said Bruce McClelland, president of Network & Cloud and Global Services at ARRIS.

“The ARRIS portfolio of products and services are at the heart of many broadband networks around the world, and we look forward to expanding our presence in the Asia-Pacific region.”

In December last year, NBN Co. signed a four-year contact with national operator Telstra.
