Singtel expects nationwide LTE-A coverage in March

Singapore Telecommunications (Singtel) is targeting nationwide LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) coverage from next month, according to local reports.

Singtel is the country’s largest operator with a 51% market share, and claimed to be the first in the world to roll out a commercial LTE-A network in June last year.

The unofficial threshold for claiming ‘nationwide coverage’ is 95%, and the operator’s LTE-A footprint is expected to hit this percentage in both rural and urban areas.

A Singtel spokesperson said that signal strength will be extremely strong: “When we measure during testing there must be a minimum of three signal bars at street level for it to count.”

The announcement for nationwide LTE-A coverage follows reports in December 2014 that rival M1 is providing LTE-A to more than 95% of the population. Number three player in Singapore, StarHub is also said to be planning full LTE-A coverage by Q3 this year.
