Swisscom and BICS deploy data roaming for trains

Swisscom and BICS have partnered for the delivery of data roaming services on Swiss national railway operator SBB’s fleet of trains.

BICS has implemented its Instant Roaming service to enable train staff to access call, messaging and data services when the train is on the network.

“SBB is a long-term strategic partner for Swisscom and, as such, the success of this very ambitious and complex project was of vital importance,” said Tommy Bertling, senior roaming manager, Swisscom.

“Providing the complete package of communications services to our enterprise customers is of vital importance, whether that is inside the country or when they are moving onto partner networks abroad.”

The agreement leverages BICS’ nationwide network infrastructure and relationships with local operators to enable a seamless mobile network.

“This deployment is a landmark for BICS in providing connectivity for an increasingly diverse customer-base,” said Sophie Greffier, VP of Europe and North Africa at BICS.

“Enterprises in specific sectors today are starting to demand the same standards of high-quality cross-border data roaming services as MNOs to run critical services for their employees.”

Last month, BICS partnered with Openmind Networks for the launch of a hosted RCS (rich communications services) solution for operators.
