The investment is part of the company’s larger strategy to transform itself into a major player in the Cambodian market, Han Hanchou, general manager and president of Seatel told reporters.
Seatel’s parent company, Southeast Asia Telecom Group, has already invested $100 million in re-branding its subsidiary.
Hanchou said that this money had gone toward the purchase of 5,500km of fibre-optic cables for a 4G VoLTE network in Cambodia, as well as the construction of a multi-storey office building in Phnom Penh’s Chamkar district.
The 4G roll-out will allegedly be split into three phases over the next two the three years, with the fibre acquisition and office build standing as phase one.
“At the end of 2015, we will start the second phase, which includes increasing capacity and coverage,” said Hanchou. “Phase three will start at the end of 2016.”
In April last year, mobile operator Beeline revealed plans to launch a 4G network in Cambodia.
