Orange considers African Airtel assets purchase

France’s Orange is considering the acquisition of a number of Bharti Airtel’s African assets, in a bid to strengthen its business in the region, people close to the matter told Bloomberg.

Orange is thought to be investigating the concept of an “Orange Africa” venture that would group all its emerging market operations into a single unit.

Bharti’s operations in its English-speaking African countries are said to be of less interest to Orange, and the French operator is allegedly also eyeing Millicom International Cellular’s assets in the region.

In September 2014, Orange expanded its mobile money offering in Africa via partnerships with a number of banks in the region.
