The trial was said to have surpassed previous projections by 20%, demonstrating a capacity of 14.4Tbps on the network, which is an increase of over 85% compared to existing technology.
The subsea cable operator plans to upgrade its network in 2015 to support the arrival of internet video streaming providers such as Netflix into Australia and New Zealand.
It said the trial demonstrates a capability of streaming over 700,000 Ultra HD (4K) videos simultaneously, or the download of more than 180 million Blu-Ray discs per month.
“The technology improvements are staggering, when you consider that the original potential of Southern Cross was 240 Gb/s back in 2000. Our current potential represents the equivalent of over 58 Southern Cross cable systems being built using the original technology,” said Southern Cross president and CEO, Anthony Briscoe.
Southern Cross also recently introduced its 100G subsea Ethernet Private Line services.
