SK Telecom launches tri-band LTE-A service in South Korea

SK Telecom has launched the world’s first commercial tri-band LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) service in South Korea today.




Offering speeds of up to 300Mbps, the services aggregates three different frequency bands; 20MHz bandwidth in 1.8GHz band, 10MHz bandwidth in 800MHz band, and 10MHz bandwidth in 2.1GHz band.

 

It is said to be four times faster than LTE and at its peak speed can allow users to download a 1GB movie in only 28 seconds.


“With the launch of the world’s first tri-band LTE-A service, we will not only provide our customers with unprecedented network speeds, but also offer differentiated and diverse mobile value-added services that meet customers’ needs and interests,” Lee Jong-bong, EVP and head of network division, SK Telecom.

 

SK Telecom claims the service is a step closer to realising 5G, as the operator aims to pioneer the next-generation technology


It aims to roll-out the tri-band LTE-A service in central areas of all cities nationwide as well as all subway lines in the first quarter of 2015.
