Viatel plans next stage of network investment

The operator will make network enhancements in Marseille in France, Frankfurt in Germany, Amsterdam in Holland, Milan in Italy and Zurich in Switzerland, utilising its existing 8,500km fibre network.

It will also extend its cloud and data connectivity services, which includes expanding its MPLS capabilities into new key markets, starting in the UK and France. It will also make its IP transit and Dedicated Internet Access (DIA) services available to customers in Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Zurich.

“This type of investment is part of a Europe wide strategy for Viatel to become the telecommunications provider of choice for wholesale and enterprise customers seeking pan-European connectivity,” said Viatel CEO Colm Piercy.

It’s been a busy year for Viatel, which completed the second phase of its 100G network in Europe in August, and also signed reseller agreements with European internet exchanges DE-CIX, France-IX and the London Internet Exchange (LINX) in June.
