Wind adds national roaming partner

Canada’s Wind Mobile has signed a roaming deal with a domestic partner; now confirmed to be TELUS, according to local reports.

The country’s fourth-largest mobile operator said that the addition would increase its presence in British Columbia, and will expand its overall coverage in the country to 97%.

The deal follows a ruling by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) in July, which said that Rogers – the largest mobile player in Canada – had discriminated against new mobile players by using exclusivity clauses and high rates in roaming agreements with these players.

“The CRTC’s recent ruling that Rogers’ exclusivity clauses are invalid opened the doors to new discussions, and we have since sat down and finalised roaming agreements with some new carriers,” Shawn Hall, a spokesman for TELUS, told local reporters via email.

In September this year, Russia’s VimpelCom and Egypt’s Global Telecom sold their stake in Wind Canada to Canadian investment firm, Globalive Capital, for $122.05 million.
