EU to “unbundle” Google?

The European parliament is said to be considering splitting Google’s search engine operations in Europe, in an attempt to end its dominance in the region’s search market.

The Financial Times reports that it has seen a draft motion which calls for the “unbundling [of] search engines from other commercial services”, which is expected to be agreed this week.

Google has experienced problems with the European Commission over anti-trust issues since 2010, with the search engine giant also receiving strong criticism on issues such as privacy and its tax policies.

The draft motion is a non-binding resolution and the European parliament has no authority to initiate legislation or break up corporations. If the motion is passed, it would instead intensify pressure on the European Commission to act against Google.
