Huawei and China Telecom deploy transport SDN

Chinese vendor Huawei and China Telecom have today announced the successful deployment of what is claimed to be the world’s first transport software defined network (T-SDN).

The T-SDN implements an intelligent private-line bandwidth on demand (BoD) app for VIP customers over a transport network, and is designed to enable users to apply for private line services online, to be provisioned immediately.

Private-line services for VIP customers represents a strategic market for China Telecom, and the company’s research institute experimented with the concept of the app while Huawei provided the network side T-SDN controller to aid its deployment.

“We are glad to cooperate with Huawei in the optical transport SDN field and to have successfully deployed the world's first innovative T-SDN,” said Zhang Chengliang, VP of China Telecom Beijing Research Institute.

“The deployment proves that SDN-based open architecture and the standard northbound interface can realise various innovative applications and interwork with network platforms. It is a key milestone for the development of transport SDN.”

Huawei claims to be an advocate of both SDN and the fast-developing network functions virtualisation (NFV) technology, and is looking to cooperate with players in the end-to-end SDN industry chain.

“[Today’s] deployment is a key milestone that effectively pushes the progress of the transport SDN industry,” said Zha Jun, president of Huawei Fixed Network Product Line.

“Huawei will continue to cooperate with China telecom is developing cutting-edge 400G, 1T, 2T and SDN technologies, and building a flexible, synergetic, intelligent and open next-generation transport network.”

The two companies partnered in April this year for the deployment of SDN technology in China Telecom’s Beijing internet data centre.
