EU to discontinue Chinese telecoms investigation

The EU has decided not to pursue its investigation into Chinese telecoms companies, the council revealed on Monday.

Following rigorous discussions between the EU and the Chinese government, the two have settled their dispute over alleged state subsidies given to local Chinese vendors, Huawei and ZTE.

Chaired by EU trade commissioner, Karel De Gucht, and Chinese Minister of Commerce, Gao Hucheng, discussions focussed on areas where relations between the two regions can be strengthened.

The case has now been resolved with the decision to appoint an independent body to monitor Chinese and European telecoms network markets.

De Gucht said that he was pleased that the EU and China have resolved the dispute.

“The EU pursues every opportunity to level out the playing field for our companies by engaging with our strategic partners including China,” De Gucht said.

“The concerns that have led us to launch the case last May can now be addressed in a systematic and regular dialogue between the two sides for the benefit of our industry.”

The settlement also stated that the relevant Chinese standard setting body would get access to European companies.
