Nokia Networks collaborates with vendors on standards initiative

Nokia Networks has collaborated with other equipment vendors and operators to create a new European Telecommunications Standards Institute Industry Specification Group (ISG).

The initiative is designed to facilitate the development of Mobile Edge Computing (MEC), and it will focus on open architecture and application programming interfaces.

Nokia said the initiative will concentrate on application programming interfaces (APIs) for a mobile multi-vendor environment for a range of computing platforms, including Nokia Liquid Applications.

Liquid Applications is designed to host third-party applications, and allows for the rapid deployment of new services. It also provides low latency and high throughput, in addition to direct access to real-time radio network information to leverage other unique applications.

Marc Rouanne, EVP of mobile broadband at Nokia Networks, said the move builds on a changing telecoms ecosystem, where vendors and operators are having to collaborate with a range of different players.

“Establishing the MEC initiative with the support of the other stakeholders will create an open multi-vendor environment at the most lucrative point within the mobile network, driving differentiated services, new applications and ultimately new revenues,” he added.

Vodafone, IBM, Intel, NTT DoCoMo and Huawei are supporting the initiative, and will help to enable the creation of industry specifications for MEC to develop mobile edge applications across the industry.
