Telefónica Deutschland to slash 1,600 jobs by 2018

Telefónica Deutschland is reportedly planning to cut 1,600 jobs in Germany by 2018, following its takeover of E-Plus earlier this month.

The cuts are estimated to equate to 20% of its German workforce and will be made over the next four years, a person close to the company said.

The source said that the job cuts, which as yet are not public knowledge, were presented to the company’s supervisory board in Munich today, and could be formally announced as soon as this afternoon.

Telefónica completed its $11 billion takeover of German mobile operator E-Plus in early October this year, following conditional approval from the EU in July.

The two companies now have a combined workforce of around 9,100 people, and the cuts are expected to affect sales positions, call-centre workers and administrative functions.
