Côte d'Ivoire to cut number of mobile operators

Côte d'Ivoire is to cancel the mobile licence of domestic-owned player Café Mobile in a bid to reduce the number of operators in the country.

The country’s telecoms regulatory body is taking the steps in a bid to improve the level of service across the sector.

There are presently seven licences and the country’s regulatory body said it will only keep those operators that are performing well.

Diemeleou Bile, head of the body, is reported to have said that Café Mobile’s network was now down, and subscribers had been notified.

The government fined all mobile operators approximately $8 million after audits in 2013 and 2014. Café Mobile was awarded the licence in 2012, and it has 200,000 subscribers.

Operators in the country include Orange, South Africa’s MTN, Libya’s Green, Etisalat’s Moov, Café Mobile and Lebanese player Koz. Warid Telecom also holds an unused permit.
