Liquid Telecom invests in Rwanda expansion

Liquid Telecom has today revealed a $34 million investment strategy for Rwanda, which includes the expansion of its network in the country, as well as what is claimed to be the first fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) service in Rwanda.

Announced at Capacity Africa 2014 in Dar es Salaam this morning (October 15), the investment will provide businesses and homes in Rwanda with access to Liquid Telecom’s high-speed broadband service.

“We are an ambitious company which is investing heavily in laying new fibre across the nation and direct to people’s doors,” said Sam Nkusi, chairman at Liquid Telecom Rwanda. “We are building a 21st century network which will help our country continue to grow and prosper.”

Liquid Telecom said that Rwanda’s central location in Africa and its role as an internet services hub between the country’s east and central regions was a deciding factor in the investment.

The $34 million investment will be implemented over the next two years and will see Liquid Telecom lay thousands of kilometres of fibre in the country, including up to its borders with Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

The FTTH service will begin in the country’s capital of Kigali, where Liquid Telecom already has a metropolitan fibre ring, offering speeds of up to 100Mbps.
