The Chinese vendor partnered with Russia’s national telecoms operator Rostelecom in June 2014 for the infrastructure, which is expected to provide high-capacity connectivity across the Sea of Okhotsk.
“Our innovative product portfolio and leading-edge transmission technology will help Rostelecom stimulate opportunities for economic, cultural and educational activities in this region,” said Ma Yanfeng, VP of sales and marketing at Huawei Marine.
The system will be deployed in two segments, linking Okha on Sakhalin Island with Ola in Magadan and Ust-Bolsheretsk in Kamchatka, the latter of which has relied on satellite infrastructure until now.
Huawei is utilising its 100Gbps technology for the deployment, and each segment will initially have two fibre pairs, designed to have a capacity of 1.6Tbps.
Yanfeng added that the project “is further evidence of the confidence major network operators have in Huawei Marine’s capabilities to design and deploy challenging subsea transmission infrastructure”.
The Far East submarine cable system is due to complete in Q4, 2015.
