iBasis and Vodafone announce 4G peering agreement

KPN-owned iBasis and Vodafone Carrier Services have announced a 4G peering agreement designed to carry live roaming traffic.

Vodafone plans to extend to its 4G roaming markets by expanding its footprint of mobile operators that directly connect to iBasis.

As a result of the deal, iBasis will benefit from gaining direct access to Vodafone’s group of companies and its mobile operator customers through the Vodafone Carrier Services’ IPX hub.

“We have enjoyed a long and mutually beneficial relationship with Vodafone,” said Willem Offerhaus, CEO of iBasis. “We are pleased to extend that relationship via our multi-service IPX interconnect, helping to ensure a consistent global LTE experience for iBasis and Vodafone customers around the world.”

The iBasis LTE Signaling eXchange provides a single point of access for its live 4G LTE signalling network, with diameter routing agents deployed in telecoms interconnect locations across the world.

iBasis has established direct connections with a number of operators, including Claro, Polkomtel, KPN and Telcel in Mexico.

Vodafone’s wholesale business was established in 2013 and the company is proceeding with its IPX/LTE roll-out for 4G services.

“Mobile subscribers today are beginning to reject the notion of network boundaries,” added Brian Fitzpatrick, CEO of Vodafone Carrier Services. “This deal is further evidence of our commitment to providing greater speed, quality, security and reach for our customers.”
