Cloudmark launches DNS security platform

Cloudmark has launched a specialised security platform, designed to provide carrier-grade protection against DNS threats.

The solution allows enterprises and service providers to quickly identify and block these DNS threats in a bid to protect their businesses and networks.

Cloudmark has noted a rise in DNS-related attacks, with hackers finding new ways of exploiting infrastructure and creating outages.

“In today’s security environment, organisations must go beyond traditional preventative measures to protect against botnets, malware, viruses and attacks,” said Neil Cook, CTO at Cloudmark. “It’s crucial to have a layered defence that addresses vulnerabilities throughout a company’s infrastructure.”

Typically, DNS attacks are not blocked by standard security measures and Cook said that by addressing this problem, organisations will be able to prevent costly network impairments.

A recent study from Cloudmark found that at one organisation, up to 40% of DNS traffic was malicious.

Patrick Donegan, senior analyst at Heavy Reading, said that criminals are actively targeting weak DNS security systems, meaning they are able to hijack subscriber devices, hide malware communications and “wreak havoc” on service providers with DDoS attacks.

“Service providers and enterprises need to take steps to proactively address their DNS security posture to ensure their entire infrastructure is properly protected,” Donegan said.

In August, VimpelCom’s Beeline in Russia partnered with Cloudmark for its phishing and virus protection services.
