DE-CIX upgrades Frankfurt exchange

DE-CIX is claiming an upgrade to its Apollon internet exchange in Frankfurt has created the world’s largest IPX node.

DE-CIX has deployed new routing systems – supplied by Alcatel-Lucent – that it claims will enable it to aggregate more customers on a single edge router and keep internet exchange traffic local within the data centre. The move is said to reduce the amount of traffic required to be routed through Apollon’s core nodes, lowering latency and keeping data flow more manageable.

It also marks the first deployment of Alcatel-Lucent’s XRS-40 routing system outside of North America.

"No other IXP continues to upgrade to the latest generation of available hardware at the same speed as we do," said Frank Orlowski, CMO for DE-CIX. "DE-CIX's core competitive advantage lies in our expertise in scaling and operating exchanges and our steadfast commitment to providing the highest-quality peering environment in the industry."

Late last year, DE-CIX launched its New York exchange and has since expanded its presence in North America.
