Swisscom and SES sign satellite broadband deal

Swisscom and satellite operator SES have today announced an agreement for the delivery of the latter’s Astra Connect service in Switzerland.

In approximately 2% of Swiss homes, DSL broadband internet access with the minimum required transmission rate is not possible. In a bid to improve this, Swisscom will use SES’ Astra Connect solution to service and upgrade these existing lines.

“We have chosen to partner with SES for this project as it is renowned for reliable solutions and for being a high-quality supplier,” said Peter Eschmann, head of broadband service obligation at Swisscom. “We are also convinced by the scalability of the Astra Connect solution.”

The Astra Connect service uses Ka-band capacity on SES’ satellite ASTRA 2E to provide next-generation broadband services in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

It has been in operation since 2007 and has proven to be unaffected by landscape, making it a desirable connectivity option for remote areas.

“We are pleased to be working with Swisscom by providing our satellite internet service offerings,” said Patrick Biewer, MD of SES Broadband Services.

“We are very proud about this new partnership, which is borne out of our capabilities to deliver and scale our services in accordance with the high quality standards set by Swisscom.”
