América Móvil considers options in Mexico

América Móvil is still analysing a potential asset sale in Mexico after vowing to divest some of its interests in the country to comply with new regulations.

The company plans to sell off part of its assets to reduce its influence below 50% of local market share, and the company said it is analysing its options for the asset sale.

América Móvil controls approximately 70% of the mobile market and over 60% of landlines in the country. It said in a filing yesterday that any final decision on the issue would still require regulatory approval.

The company is still planning on which of its infrastructure assets will be separated, and it is still deciding on how it will reduce its share to below 50%.

“The company is still analysing the cellular sites, towers and related passive infrastructure that could be separated from its Mexican subsidiary of mobile services,” the company said in a statement.

AT&T is one of the companies rumoured to be interested in entering the Mexican market.
