TeliaSonera’s Lithuanian subsidiary Omnitel, has partnered with Huawei to deploy the Chinese vendor’s Blade Site solution.

Huawei’s Blade Site solution is designed to support operators as they address challenges in site acquisition, and the deal with Omnitel is claimed to be the world’s first commercial deployment of the solution.

"Omnitel is a market leader in technical innovations and has the largest 4G LTE network in the country, covering more than 65% of the Lithuanian population,” said Mindaugas Varanauskas, CTO at Omnitel.

“As we continue our 4G network roll-out across Lithuania, the deployment of the Huawei Blade Site solution will accelerate the speed of network construction and reduce operational expenses, enabling us to deliver on our goal of providing the best 4G network experience to our customers more efficiently."

The solution uses baseband and wireless base station technology and is designed to be environmentally friendly with the capability to be installed across a number of different sites and locations such as walls, poles and roof tops.

It also supports combinations of baseband unit (BBU), radio frequency (RF) and power modules, and global system for mobile (GSM), universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) and LTE three-mode concurrent operations to enable effective deployment at complex sites.

“Huawei and TeliaSonera will continue to build on our strategic partnership to achieve greater business success through the deployment of more innovative and competitive solutions in the region,” said Lu Yong, president of Huawei Central and Eastern Europe and Nordic region.
