GSMA urges European Commission to accelerate repurposing of UHF spectrum

The GSMA has urged the European Commission to accelerate the repurposing of the UHF spectrum band (470-790MHz).

The GSMA’s comments come in response to a European Commission report on the future use of UHF spectrum, which it believes will put Europe at a competitive disadvantage.

The report proposes that remaining UHF spectrum below 700MHz will be safeguarded for broadcasters until 2030.

The GSMA, however, argues this will discourage network investment. It believes UHF spectrum band will be “essential” in meeting demand for mobile broadband, and can also help the region close the gap with North America and Asia.

“Limiting Europe’s flexibility on the possible co-existence of mobile and digital broadcast services until 2030 will discourage investment in world-leading mobile networks,” said Anne Bouverot, director general, GSMA.

“Predictable, timely and affordable access to spectrum is an essential element for driving Europe's economic growth and job prospects, delivering significant socio-economic benefits for businesses and individuals.”
