Alcatel-Lucent to deploy 4G network in US Midwest

French vendor Alcatel-Lucent has partnered with service provider Pioneer Cellular to deploy a 4G LTE overlay network in the states of Oklahoma and Kansas in Midwestern US.

Affiliate of Pioneer Telephone Corp., Pioneer Cellular expects the network to enable it to provide ultra-broadband mobile access to its customers in the regions; which includes 47 countries in Oklahoma and 14 countries in Kansas.

“Pioneer Cellular is a customer-driven organisation with a corporate mission to provide the best service possible to our wireless customers in areas where most carriers have chosen not to provide advanced services,” said Richard Ruhl, general manager at Pioneer.

“The new 4G LTE core network will allow Pioneer to provide our customers with high quality mobile and fixed ultra-broadband services.”

Pioneer delivers connectivity via roaming and interconnect agreements with other carriers, and hopes the deployment will help to bridge the gap between served and underserved areas across Kansas and Oklahoma. 25 initial sites are due to be completed by the year end.

“Alcatel-Lucent enjoys a strong and positive 20-year working relationship with Pioneer,” said Charles Marsh, president of Alcatel-Lucent’s Americas region.

“This announcement extends that partnership further, demonstrating the importance of 4G LTE for Pioneer’s customers and the rural marketplace in general.”

US conglomerate Sprint also selected Alcatel-Lucent for the deployment of its TDD-LTE mobile access network in October last year.
