T-Mobile US plans to overtake Sprint by year end

T-Mobile US has declared its intentions to overtake Sprint as the third-largest operator in the US by the end of the year, CEO John Legere said on Twitter yesterday.

SoftBank-owned Sprint is presently undergoing a string of reforms after announcing this week that it had appointed Bolivian billionaire Marcelo Claure as its new CEO, replacing Dan Hesse.

Sprint dropped its bid to acquire T-Mobile US this week and Legere’s claim came after his company had announced it had overtaken its rival to become the top wireless provider for prepaid customers, with 15.64 million subscribers.

T-Mobile, known in the market as the “uncarrier”, is now also ahead of larger rivals AT&T and Verizon in the pre-paid market, and Legere was bullish about the company’s fortunes for the rest of the year.

“I predict the #uncarrier will overtake Sprint in total customers by the end of the year! There I said it!” tweeted Legere.

Hesse’s downfall came after Sprint saw a large number of customers leave the network provider, because of a range of service problems following a network overhaul.

T-Mobile US has turned to an aggressive strategy to revive its fortunes, and will reportedly spend between $5 billion and $10 billion in an upcoming radio frequency airwaves auction to boost its spectrum holdings.
