Interxion acquires Marseille data centre

Interxion is set to acquire the SFR Netcenter data centre facilities in Marseille, France.

The MRS 1 data centre will eventually offer a total of 5,700 sq m of equipped space, with the first phase of work scheduled for completion in Q4 offering 500 sq m.

MRS 1 presently serves as a transit and caching node for approximately 60 network providers, and is able to access eight subsea cables that land in Marseille.

Interxion is expected to close the deal in Q3, spending a total of €45 million on the purchase and construction of MRS 1, of which €20 million is associated with the purchase of the freehold land and buildings.

The facility is expected to strengthen the data centre provider’s position in Europe. In particular, the company is targeting growth opportunities in the cloud and CDN markets: “We expect to expand the existing connectivity hub in MRS 1 and to develop vibrant cloud and CDN hubs,” said David Ruberg, Interxion CEO. “The purchase of MRS 1 is consistent with Interxion’s strategy of deploying capital in a disciplined manner to meet strong customer demand, secure magnetic customers, and develop communities of interest that enable us to achieve attractive long-term returns.”

In April, Interxion announced that it was accelerating plans to expand its data centres in Amsterdam and Frankfurt, subsequently increasing its 2014 annual capex guidance to between €175m and €200m.
