Vodafone UK secures government cybersecurity credentials

Vodafone UK has been awarded an enhanced cybersecurity certification, Cyber Essentials Plus, from the UK government.

The UK telco was tested by auditors for compliance to the new standard and had to reach a 100% pass rate. It claims to be the first telco to receive such an accreditation.

Howard Pinto, head of technology security at Vodafone UK, said that the company takes cybersecurity and customers’ data protection very seriously.

“We want our customers to be assured that when they do business with us we are doing everything possible to protect their data, our critical systems and business operations,” Pinto said.

“To be the first telecoms company and the first multinational to have met the new Cyber Essentials Plus standard highlights our ongoing commitment to ensuring the security and protection of our IT and customers systems and online assets,” he added.

The certification is part of a two-tier scheme, launched on June 5 2014, whereby entrants must meet a number of stringent criteria for protection against cyberattacks. It is expected to become an increasingly important standard for businesses and telcos nationwide.

“Organisations need to take cybersecurity seriously, so it’s reassuring that Vodafone UK has taken the lead to become the first telecommunications provider in the UK to have achieved the Cyber Essentials Plus accreditation,” said Ed Vaizey, Minister for Culture and the Digital Economy.

In February 2013, Vodafone signed a five-year partnership with security company BAE Systems to provide mobile users with more effective security solutions.
