Fibre and pay-TV drives BT’s strong Q1 results

BT Group has posted strong first quarter results, with revenue up 0.5% and core earnings flat at £1.4 billion.

The UK operator met its forecasts and has attributed its performance to demand for fibre broadband and pay-TV.

Its fibre broadband network covers more than 20 million premises, with over 2.3 million customers.

BT ‘s move into the pay-TV market, where it is increasingly taking the fight to market leader BSkyB through heavily investing in sports rights, is also beginning to pay off. It added a further 40,000 TV customers, bringing its total to more than 1 million.

“We have made a good start to the year. We have delivered growth in underlying revenue excluding transit and in profit before tax, and free cash flow was strong,” said Gavin Patterson, CEO, BT Group.
