Telefónica has selected Nokia Networks to provide radio access equipment and services as part of its network upgrade to 4G across Spain. The vendor will be a key supplier for sites in Andalusia, Galicia, Castilla León and Levante over a period of three years. [read more]

Hibernia Networks has resumed work on its transatlantic Hibernia Express subsea cable. The $300 million project had been on hiatus since February 2013, when Capacity broke the news that it had become embroiled in mounting tensions between the US and China over cybersecurity. The vendor contract for the cable has since switched from Huawei Marine – a UK subsidiary of Chinese telecoms equipment maker Huawei – to US-based TE SubCom. [read more]

KDDI is investing a further £135 million in Telehouse’s data centre campus in London Docklands, UK. The move is aimed at expanding the data centre's network ecosystem in Europe, and will see the creation of a new facility – Telehouse North Two – which will focus on the development of hybrid services. SingTel is claiming to be the first operator in the world to offer a commercial 300Mbps 4G service, following the launch of Huawei’s E5785 mobile device. Chinese vendor Huawei has launched the device – which is compatible with LTE-Advanced networks – to deliver data speeds of up to 300Mbps. [read more]

The Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRA) of India has recommended that operators in the country should be allowed to share spectrum. The move is aimed at increasing access to spectrum at a lower cost, and will enable two operators that both hold the same band in the same coverage circle to pool spectrum. Previously, operators were only allowed to share physical infrastructure such as mobile towers. [read more]

Companies wishing to invest in rural parts of Canada have been invited to lay claim to approximately $284 million of government spending over the next three years to upgrade internet access in parts of the country. The government's Connecting Canadians plan is designed to deliver high-quality internet with speeds of faster that 5Mbps, to 280,000 households which presently do not have access to such a service. Telefonica Global Solutions has revealed that IPX traffic increased by a total of 63% on its international network during this year’s FIFA World Cup in Brazil. The increase was recorded between June 12 and July 13, with the peak being an 88% increase during the early stages of the football championship. [read more]

Vodafone Portugal and Portugal Telecom have signed an agreement to deploy and share fibre networks to reach 900,000 homes in Portugal. The plans will be in place from December 2014 and will run for 25 years. The partnership is designed to enable both companies to offer high-speed data access to an additional 450,000 homes and businesses throughout the country. [read more]

US carrier Verizon has completed a trial over its regional Ethernet network between two 100G network interface devices (NID). The trial consisted of transmitting 100G traffic for 4.6 miles over Verizon's regionally switched Ethernet services network in Dallas. [read more]

Algérie Télécom has partnered with Nokia Networks to modernise its transport network sites with a highly flexible MPLS network. The move is designed to allow Algérie Télécom subscribers better data services, and under the terms of the deal, Nokia Networks Global Services will provide network implementation to ensure a smooth deployment of the IP/MPLS solution in partnership with Juniper Networks.
