China Mobile to install 500,000 4G base stations by year end

China Mobile has revealed plans to install over 500,000 4G base stations by the end of 2014.

The company has over 14 million subscribers signed up for its 4G mobile network, representing only 2% of the company’s 791 million total mobile customers.

China is one of the last major markets to commence 4G LTE services, with services expected to launch later this year.

China Mobile awarded contracts to vendors Huawei and ZTE to build out its 4G network in March, and the company aims to have 50 million 4G contracts by the end of the year.

China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom launched a joint-venture infrastructure-sharing company earlier this month, complete with an investment of approximately $1.61 billion.
