Spain's Telefónica and Chinese vendor Huawei have announced a joint development agreement for the deployment of optical distribution network (ODN) solutions. The solutions include Huawei's FastConnect services, designed to help Telefónica address the challenges of fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) connectivity, as well as improve the fibre deployment process. Allied Fiber and Coriant have successfully demonstrated the trial of 1Tbps super-channel transmission over a 1,700km fibre-optic ring in Florida, US. The companies used Coriant's flexi-grid technology through Allied Fiber's facility in its open-access, integrated, network-neutral, co-location and dark fibre infrastructure to conduct the trial. Telecom New Zealand is planning to launch 4G LTE services in August this year following its licence acquisition in the 700MHz spectrum band. The country's incumbent is aiming to launch the services to complement existing 4G offerings in limited regions, which utilise the 1800MHz band. [read more]

The Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) has announced the expansion of its fixed-line, mobile and broadband networks in the country, with the deployment of 5,000 additional 4G base stations. The base stations are designed to bring faster mobile connectivity to the majority of cities and municipalities in the country over the next few months. [read more]

AT&T has expanded its 4G LTE network in south west Indiana with the upgrade of 10 additional sites. The cell sites are located in areas across Pike, Spencer, Vanderburgh and Warrick counties and the upgrades are designed to provide better coverage and services to businesses and consumers in those areas. Manx Telecom on the Isle of Man, situated in the waters between Britain and Ireland, has revealed plans for the launch of the island's first 4G service. The operator said it will launch its 4G LTE network on July 29 2014 and it is expected to cover 95% of the island's population. [read more]

Sunday's 2014 FIFA World Cup final in Brazil broke records for the amount of data sent by fans at the ground, according to the National Union of Telephone Companies (SindiTelebrasil). In the Maracanã stadium in Rio de Janeiro, SindiTelebrasil said that networks installed by local carriers recorded a traffic volume equivalent to approximately 2.6 million photos, with an average file size of 0.55Mb. Orange has launched a high-capacity IP PoP in West Africa, claimed to be the first of its kind in the region. Situated in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, the PoP is designed to enhance internet connectivity across West Africa, including faster connection speeds and better reliability for wholesale customers. AT&T has signed an agreement with international fertiliser and salt producer K+S to move the company's network infrastructure to a single global private network. Through AT&T's network, K+S will now be able to connect its operations across 200 locations in Europe, North and South America and Asia. [read more]

BICS has revealed a PoP in Johannesburg, South Africa, in a bid to enhance its African presence and offer operators better transit quality for traffic exchange in the region. The PoP will be located in the facilities of South African data centre firm Teraco and is designed to optimise transit routes and lower latency. [read more]

Allied Fiber has signed a 20-year agreement with Latin American provider GlobeNet for dark fibre, neutral co-location and interconnection services. GlobeNet will now gain access to open interconnection with other network operators that enter Allied Fiber co-location facilities, in addition to route path and interconnection points. [read more]
