Orange establishes IP PoP in West Africa

Orange has launched a high-capacity IP PoP in West Africa, claimed to be the first of its kind in the region.

Situated in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, the PoP is designed to enhance internet connectivity across West Africa, including faster connection speeds and better reliability for wholesale customers.

The PoP forms part of Orange’s technical infrastructure in the region and will also help local networks to access internet services via an interconnection point with long distance carrier networks.

Abidjan hosts a landing point for the ACE submarine cable, making it a prime location for an IP PoP as it allows for optimal connectivity both nationally and internationally.

The fully redundant PoP is expected to open up the region for Orange, and allow for the eventual expansion into the African IP market – an area of rapidly growing economic activity according to local analysts.

Last month, Telecom Italia Sparkle signed an agreement with Ghana’s Dolphin Telecom for an IP expansion in the West African region.
