Allied Fiber and Coriant complete 1Tbps trial

Allied Fiber and Coriant have successfully demonstrated the trial of 1Tbps super-channel transmission over a 1,700km fibre-optic ring in Florida, US.

The companies used Coriant’s flexi-grid technology through Allied Fiber’s facility in its open-access, integrated, network-neutral, co-location and dark fibre infrastructure to conduct the trial.

The trial was conducted over Allied Fiber’s Corning fibre in south east Florida and was designed to show operators how the technology from both companies can enable connections between access networks – both fibre and mobile – and long-haul carrier, content and enterprise networks.

“We are excited with the results of the trial with Coriant on our network-neutral infrastructure,” said Hunter Newby, CEO at Allied Fiber. “It highlights how our new Corning fibre has performed carrying 1Tb transmission, which should be encouraging news for all network operations looking to light their own transport route both for the capabilities of the technology and for the availability of the long-haul dark fibre to run it on.”

The trial demonstrated 1Tbps super-channel transmission in a 368.7GHz grid over 1,700km, as well a 35% improvement in spectral efficiency, significantly increasing system capacity.

Pat DiPietro, CEO at Coriant, said that the partnership with Allied Fiber showed the value of next-generation optical networking technologies.

“We are committed to helping our partners like Allied Fiber meet the capacity requirements of residential and business end-user services with systems capable of seamless and efficient scalability to 1Tbper channel and beyond,” DiPietro added.

Coriant completed a successful 1Tbps trial with NBN Co. in Australia in March 2014.
