Zain Kuwait and Nokia Networks claim to have successfully completed Kuwait's first ever voice over LTE (VoLTE) call, using Zain's commercial LTE network. Nokia Networks' used its VoLTE solution to conduct the high-definition voice call with video capability, and simultaneously accessed ultra-fast data services over Zain's LTE network. [read more]

Movistar Peru has announced an extension of its 4G LTE network in the country to include Trujillo and Arequipa. Movistar was the first operator to launch LTE services in Peru in January this year, and the extension brings its total 4G footprint to 31 districts across the country. [read more]

Subsea cable operator GBI has extended its network from du's landing station in Fujairah to a datamena data centre facility in Dubai. The datamena facility will enable the extension of GBI's network into Dubai, and customers are expected to benefit from seamless end-to-end connectivity within the GBI network into Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa. Vodafone Netherlands has held a trial for LTE Advanced and could launch the service later this year. LTE Advanced can theoretically give speeds of a maximum 225Mbps, and the company said it will launch in approximately 10 cities in the country, including Amsterdam and Rotterdam. [read more]

TeliaSonera International Carrier (TSIC) has selected Ciena's converged packet optical platform for the pan-European segment for its global fibre network. TSIC is deploying Ciena's 5400 platform across its infrastructure in Europe, and will create a flexible and OTN-based network to support service providers with bandwidth and network-on-demand transport services. Czech operators Vodafone, O2 and T-Mobile are reportedly planning to share networks for 2G, 3G and LTE services. O2 has revealed that an advisor will prepare an analysis on the value of implementing the plans. [read more]

Mobile operator EE has announced it has completed the migration of its national IP/MPLS core network for 4G connectivity, in partnership with Juniper Networks. EE was the UK's first operator to launch 4G services in 2012, and its coverage now reaches approximately 72% of the country's population. [read more]



Mobiltel, the Bulgarian subsidiary of the Telekom Austria Group, has a completed a trial of NFV. In partnership with Affirmed Networks, the mobile operator demonstrated HD video streaming by combining LTE technology and NFV. [read more]

Data centre provider Equinix and equipment vendor Ciena have signed an agreement to enable on-demand, virtual network capabilities for service provider and enterprise customers. The deal is designed to allow these customers to quickly provision high-speed, high-capacity network resources whenever they need them. [read more]

Zain Saudi Arabia (KSA) is set to upgrade its network after signing infrastructure supply contracts worth $1.2 billion. The company - Saudi Arabia's third-largest operator - has reportedly signed agreements with numerous vendors for the upgrade, including Huawei, Nokia, NEC Corporation, Cisco Systems and Alcatel-Lucent.
