Telecom Italia embarks on SDN migration

Telecom Italia has partnered with Juniper Networks to migrate its network to SDN/NFV technology.

The Italian operator will deploy Juniper Networks’ MX Series 3D Universal Edge Routers on its service PoP infrastructure, which is said to act as an edge services aggregation node. The solution will be used as a universal SND gateway to connect physical and virtual networks.

Telecom Italia is also trialling Juniper Networks’ Contrail SDN and NFV controller with OpenStack, which is said to integrate virtual and physical network functions.

“The integration of Juniper Networks high-performance technology as a ‘service hub’ brings increased flexibility to introduce new service features to our customers. We leverage Juniper’s expertise to make SDN/NFV technologies the key to shortening time-to-market and improving cost effectiveness,” said Paolo Fasano, data networks innovation, Telecom Italia.
