Orange fined in Mali for breaching network rules

Regulators in Mali have fined Orange over $14 million for allegedly using mobile bandwidth in the country for fixed-line services.

Orange said it will appeal against the fine, which was made public over the weekend by Choguel Maiga, MD of Malian regulator, the AMRTP.

Orange is accused of breaking Malian telecoms rules by using its mobile phone platform for “Douba” fixed-line capabilities, and the company has rejected the accusation.

According to Sekou Drame, Mali’s deputy MD, Orange had not broken any rules and would be appealing the decision.

“Orange Mali would not allow itself to break the law in Mali,” he said. “The ‘Douba’ service is regularly offered to clients in line with the rules that govern this sector.”
