Reliance Jio Infocomm selects DragonWave for LTE backhaul

India’s Reliance Jio Infocomm has selected DragonWave’s packet microwave radio system for its nationwide 4G network.

Canadian microwave radio vendor DragonWave will provide its Horizon Compact+ links to Reliance Jio, designed to support traffic backhaul from the LTE network.

Reliance Jio has reportedly completed extensive testing of the Horizon Compact+ system to ensure it is suitable for use as a transport system for high-capacity backhaul.

"We believe that the Horizon Compact+ radio brings considerable value in India, where backhaul spectrum is both limited and expensive,” said Peter Allen, president and CEO at DragonWave.

DragonWave’s solution combines 2048 QAM modulation with a bandwidth accelerator capable of bulk compression, which the company claims delivers unsurpassed spectral efficiency.

The deployment also includes a number of services being delivered by DragonWave’s joint venture in India, DragonWave HFCL.

“This is DragonWave HFCL’s first major services win in India, showing our deployment capabilities have matured,” said Ram Raghavan, CEO at DragonWave HFCL.

Reliance Jio received its unified 4G licence in October last year, and in April 2014, the company signed a tower-sharing deal with ATC India in a bid to accelerate its 4G roll-out.
